Description

This is currently my pride and glory. I had made this for my host families as a "thank you" present for all their kindness. I'll be buying a print and giving it to them as a gift. I might do a second one to give them both something different. But I also might not. I have already sketched it, I just need to scan and colour it. But I'm so proud of this one, I just might give them this instead.

I have to admit that the background is not entirely mine. I took a portion of :iconushio18:'s :[link] and painted over it a bit. I was flipping through DA and thought it would fit my image perfectly.

Sketch found here: [link]

About the dragon:
Faerie dragons come in all shapes, sizes and colours, so I'll talk about this little guy's breed specifically. This one is about the length of an average person's arm, their wingspan is twice that.

These little dragons have no natural predators, and are generally left alone despite their size. These little dragons are brightly coloured, which in nature spells "poisonous" to other animals. If any curious bird or cat tried to bite one, they'd get a face full of claws and then have their feathers/fur lit on fire.

They are mostly nocturnal, but like any dragon, they still love to bask in the sun once in a while. They have large eyes to help them see at night, but it is their echolocation that helps them navigate. Their ears a framed by a large membrane ( much like their wing material) to help them catch echolocation.

Being so small, one can be fooled into believing that they are unintelligent creatures, but that is not so. They can solve difficult puzzles faster than the smartest bird and they absolutely love playing tricks on unsuspecting creatures. Humans are their favorites. They communicate in squeaks and chirps but like birds, they can imitate voices and learn commands ( assuming you can befriend one, you can train them easily). Very basic communication can be exchanged between a human and these dragons.
The membrane behind their ears also work for communication. The membrane is lined with bio-luminescent cells that change colour depending on their mood. Beautiful arrays of colours can be used to scare off animals, and to attract a mate as well. The dragon in this picture is a female, the males tend to have more sets of membranes littered across their bodies. They can be found on their spine, chin and on their arms or legs.

Their diet is mainly small bugs and fish. These nimble dragons are extremely swift and love to take a swim in order to catch their meal. Their large wings and flipper-like tail ( which had evolved for stability while flying but had been discovered useful for other purposes) help them glide through the water, much to their delight.

Although they are much smaller then their large Draconic cousins, they should not be taken lightly.

Edit: I gave a print to my second host family and they really liked it! They were really surprised and amazed, so I'm really glad ^____^

Could this be a RainWing sub-species?
